Sustainable Solutions

Sustainable Art Logistics

We are dedicated to integrating sustainability into our fine art logistics services. Our commitment is demonstrated through investments in eco-friendly infrastructure, such as our London West storage facility, which features energy-efficient systems to minimise carbon emissions. We have also achieved Planet Mark Business Certification, underscoring our pledge to reduce our environmental impact annually. Additionally, our exclusive UK partnership with Turtle provides clients with reusable, high-performance art crates, further promoting sustainable practices in art transportation.

Sustainable Storage Solutions

In tandem with the NDC and leading institutions, we have looked to invest in environmentally efficient buildings, in order to reduce our direct emissions impact.

Constantine London West provides a secure environment within a facility designed and constructed with energy-saving and sustainable energy production systems at its core.

The storage environment has been designed to fully utilise our integrated sustainable energy systems. This both reduces the carbon footprint of Constantine London West and provides benchmark sustainability standards for our industry.

Sustainable Partnerships

We are proud to announce that we have achieved Planet Mark Business Certification. We are committed to cutting our measured footprint annually. Planet Mark is committed to helping businesses find unified solutions to reduce carbon emissions, secure net zero targets, and deliver meaningful climate action.

Achieving Business Certification is the first step in the transition towards net zero. As Planet Mark Members, we must achieve annual 5% reductions in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and measure some Scope 3 emissions within direct operational control (such as business travel and waste). We look forward to expanding our measurement remit and taking strides towards net zero at a critical time for our planet. We are focused on continuous improvement and are proud to be a Planet Mark Certified Business.

Turtle Crates

Constantine is the exclusive UK partner of Turtle providing our clients with a sustainable and innovative solution to the safe packing and transportation of artwork with industry-leading performance.

Turtle is the result of extensive testing to develop and refine the unique properties of this climate crate, with materials designed and developed for use by aerospace engineers. This radically innovative product brings the standard of fine art packaging to its highest level and has been used by world-leading museums for over 25 years.

The reusable crates are made in the UK and have a lifespan of over 25 years. If you'd like to find out more information, please contact our team at [email protected]

Hire Crating Service

Over 200 reusable crates from the “Island Laminate Range” are available to hire via Constantine. Crates available include Picture, Object and Slotted variations.

The crates are constructed to a high museum specification and have been used by leading UK museums for many years. All of the crates also carry the ISPM15 wood packaging stamp.

These crates are available to hire from our facilities in London and Scotland. We offer daily rates, as well as longer hire periods. Please send all enquiries to [email protected]

ReCreate UK

Alongside these projects, we are pleased to highlight the work of ReCreate UK, a not-for-profit initiative focused on making exhibition production more sustainable. ReCreate UK works with museums, galleries and build teams to remove, store and redistribute materials from temporary exhibition sets, giving them a second life in creative and community projects.

Their approach closely aligns with our ambition to reduce waste across the sector, and we are happy to recommend ReCreate UK to clients and partners who are exploring practical ways to reuse exhibition materials and embed circular thinking into their programmes.

FAQs

1. What does “sustainable art logistics” mean in practice?
For us, it’s a set of practical choices that reduce emissions and waste across storage, packing, and transport. That includes investing in more efficient buildings (such as our London West facility), and pushing reuse where it’s viable, rather than defaulting to single-use materials.

2. What is Planet Mark Business Certification, and what does it commit you to?
We’ve achieved Planet Mark Business Certification, and as members, we commit to measured, ongoing improvements, including annual reductions in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and measuring selected Scope 3 emissions within direct operational control (such as business travel and waste).

3. How do reusable crates reduce the environmental impact of art transport?
Reusable crates cut the need for repeat fabrication and reduce waste over time. We’re the exclusive UK partner of Turtle, a reusable climate crate designed to protect against humidity and temperature fluctuation while also reducing shock and vibration, and intended for long service life.

4. Do you offer hire crates as a lower-waste alternative to bespoke crating?
Yes. We have 200+ reusable hire crates (picture, object, and slotted variations) from the “Island Laminate Range”, built to a high museum specification and carrying the ISPM15 stamp, available from London and Scotland for daily or longer hire periods.

5. Can you help reduce waste from exhibition builds and deinstalls?
Where a client is looking to reuse or redistribute temporary set materials, we’re happy to recommend ReCreate UK, a not-for-profit initiative focused on removing, storing, and redistributing materials from temporary exhibition sets to give them a second life.
